Babies: The Movie

A couple of years ago, a movie came out that was titled, “Babies”. It is a documentary about just that. Four babies during their first year of life in four very different parts of the world. Japan, Namibia, Mongolia, and San Francisco. When I heard about it, I remembered thinking I wanted to see it, but like everything else, it got put on hold because I just had a baby of my own last year. But, recently, we decided to make it a family event and watch it with all three of our babies. It was fascinating to see the … Continue reading

Walt Disney’s Wonderland

“Alice in Wonderland” is that rare Disney movie for which the source text is more beloved than the animated adaptation. Today I’m only looking at the 1951 Walt-Disney-overseen animated adaptation of the famous stories by Lewis Carroll, not Tim Burton’s recent live action film; perhaps I’ll return to that another day. Disney did something interesting with this film: it’s an adaptation of both “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass.” Bringing both stories to the screen is possible because, well, both are just the tales of Alice’s many adventures in Wonderland. Neither have a specific plot; Alice falls … Continue reading

Babies and Film

This is less a film review than it is a film experience. This past week my wife and I took our son to see the new film Babies. If you haven’t seen the trailer for this do a web search and give it a quick view. To say that the trailer is inspiring would be an understatement. It’s rare that I am so compelled to see a film and even more rare that I am willing to pay the amount to actually go see it in the theater. My experience that day reinforced the importance of communal experiences like movie … Continue reading

Jon Gosselins Mantrums and Michael Jackson’s Millions

Not only does Jon Gosselin have soon to be ex-wife problems (with his babies mama Kate), but he also apparently has current girlfriend problems. Hailey Glassman, the daughter of the plastic surgeon that did Kate’s tummy tuck after the birth of their sextuplets, has publicly said that Jon is like “Jekyll and Hyde” and that he throws what she calls “mantrums.” For those that don’t know, that is a male tantrum. Hailey also told “The Insider” in a two part interview that Jon takes his anger out on her and is emotionally abusive, but she still loves him. For his … Continue reading

Birthparents from the show 16 and Pregnant Have Bittersweet Moments But No Regrets

The same People magazine issue (October 5, 2009) that told Katherine Heigl’s joyous adoption story also featured an update on the adoption featured on MTV’s reality show, 16 and Pregnant. Four months after Catelynn Lowell and her boyfriend Tyler Baltierra placed their daughter with adoptive parents in North Carolina, they are starting their senior year of high school in Michigan–and coping with bittersweet moments haunted by memories of the baby who Catelynn says looks like both of them. The couple are at peace with their decision, however. They decided to make an adoption plan for their baby soon after they … Continue reading

Marriages, Babies, and a Shocking Claim

I have a bit of catching up to do with pop culture events. First, the marriages – actress Zoey Deschanel and Death Cab for Cutie lead singer Ben Gibbard married last Saturday. The couple, who got engaged last year, wed in Seattle. Waiting until this Sunday for her big day is Khloe Kardashian. Although she and NBA star Lamar Odom have only been dating for about a month, the two will be walking down the aisle this weekend. Reports are that the wedding will be held at the Los Angeles home of family friend (and music manager) Irving Azoff. If … Continue reading

Celebrity Love: Jennifer Aniston, Kristin Davis and Tori Spelling

Contrary to popular belief, Tate Donovan and Brad Pitt are not the only guys who have proposed to Jennifer Aniston. In a recent interview with USA Today, the actress claims that she once turned down a romantic marriage proposal in a crowded restaurant in the 1990s. According to the former “Friends” star, the proposal came from an ex-boyfriend while she was working as a waitress at a L.A. restaurant, long before her acting career took off. Aniston tells the paper that she was horrified when her ex arrived at her workplace and got down on one knee – in front … Continue reading
