Chin Scraping

As a parent you hate to see your child get hurt. Any sort of pain that they suffer seems to be doubled back on you. Your ability to empathize with their feelings is either created (if you never had it) or amplified (if you were already empathetic). It’s kind of amazing that children have this effect on parents and caregivers. Children literally calm the world. It is for these reasons (and probably others) that I felt so bad recently when our son slipped on something and banged his little chin on the floor. It happened while I had a friend … Continue reading

Pet Chin Acne

A few years ago, I discovered that Lally had a plastic allergy when I saw pet chin acne. She started breaking out in little red bumps all over her muzzle. After ruling out a food allergy, the vet suggested that she might be allergic to the plastic in her bowl. We switched to a ceramic bowl and she hasn’t had any trouble since! Acne is a relatively common skin problem in cats and dogs. The problem can start at any age, and looks a lot like acne in humans — red bumps, often on the chin and lower lip. The … Continue reading

Courageous Mothers

As Mothers, we don’t often see ourselves as warriors, or courageous. We sometimes feel like we are barely scraping by. Inadequate. But, we are so much more than that. Our work as mothers is divine, and one of the most important works that God has entrusted to Man. To raise His children. Teach them. Love them. I heard President Monson share a quote that lifted me up today. It says, “Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, ‘I’ll try again tomorrow’”. This is a quote from Mary Anne Radmacher. Yesterday, I had a … Continue reading

Get Serious About Saving

Saving money; it’s much easier said than done, especially in today’s slumping economy. With the talk of recession, depression and compression of funds in the news every day, there seems to be no shortage of financial experts providing tips on how to make pinching pennies pay off big time. But, here’s the thing about money gurus telling middle-class Americans that they should be socking away a third of their paychecks each month in order to create an emergency fund to use should some economic crises befall their family. If you are just scraping by as it is, there is no … Continue reading

Wild Africa Trek

Everyone around here knows how much I love the idea of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The concept of a zoo in an amusement park would be neat enough, but the Animal Kingdom is in some ways closer to a safari experience than that of a zoo. My excitement about the Animal Kingdom leads me to share new information any time there’s news about the park. I’ve managed to restrain myself from posting in paroxysms of glee whenever a baby animal is born there, but I think that the creation of a new attraction at the Animal Kingdom warrants attention. The official … Continue reading

Fantasyland Expansion Update

Since I first wrote about the 2012 Fantasyland expansion Disney World has released more information about the upcoming changes to the park. Construction has officially begun, but now that the expansion is becoming reality, we’re learning that not all of the original plans for the new Fantasyland will come to fruition. The Orlando Sentinel has the latest details about the transformation currently happening right now in the Magic Kingdom. While the expansion still revolves around the Disney Princess theme, their section won’t be as elaborate as originally planned. Instead of Cinderella, Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Snow White, Belle, and Ariel each … Continue reading

The Happy Sweeper

I recntly wrote about the difficult time we sometimes have making it to parks with our son. Our ever-changing work schedules and one-car situation make it often impossible to get very far away from our home sometimes. Our backyard, then, presents a world of opportunities far beyond what one would imagine from such a small, fenced in area. Our backyard is, at present, also home to our Christmas tree. Where we live you must deliver your own tree to a drop-off location and, well, we don’t have a truck (we’re bad Texans). Our son, having received a play toolbox (with … Continue reading

The Dirtiest Job in the House

You can learn a lot by watching TV. Just the other day I discovered that you come into contact with more bacteria while cleaning out a fish bowl than disinfecting a dirty toilet. In addition, according to the PBS kids’ show my daughter had on while I was making breakfast, the average refrigerator door handle harbors more germs than the bathroom floor. Thanks, Fetch! Kids’ show science facts aside, in my opinion, cleaning toilets is the dirtiest job in the house. I can’t stand dealing with rings above the water line. The unsightly rings around the toilet are typically caused … Continue reading

Beware The Scabies Mite!

Scabies is a condition that affects the skin making you itch uncontrollably. These little mites burrow under your skin and spread from person to person. It can affect the very young to the very old. It is passed along through close contact with the infected person, towels and linens that are shared, as well as their other belongings. The symptoms are pretty clear when you are afflicted with scabies. The itch is terribly annoying and uncomfortable and often strikes worse during the nighttime hours. The people that this itching affects most severely are children or the elderly. The first sign … Continue reading

Say So Long to Summer with Spicy Cashew Strawberry Salad and Orange Spinach Salad

Summer is fading away… say it ain’t so. Soon it will be back to school, back to wool sweaters and back to scraping ice off my windshield. But, rather than dwell on the inevitable I’ve been trying to spend as much time outside as possible, including dining alfresco. Next week our entire playgroup will be having an end of the summer luncheon in the park. And with the Labor Day holiday fast approaching most of you likely have outdoor plans as well. If you are looking for a quick and easy potluck dish to pass at your next outdoor gathering … Continue reading
