Prudential Settles With States Over Death Benefit Issue

Last year, nine insurance companies were subpoenaed as part of an investigation being done by several states. The investigation had to do with how the insurance industry was handling unclaimed life insurance benefits. This week, Prudential signed a settlement with the Insurance Regulators. It all started in 2011. There were questions about how some insurance companies were handling the money that came from the death benefit of life insurance policies. When a policyholder dies, the death benefit is supposed to go to the person that the policyholder selected as his or her beneficiary. The insurance company is supposed to put … Continue reading

Computer Death

If you’ve read this blog with any frequency you’ll be aware that I like technology. No, I’m not the guy with every new device in hand the day it comes out. I’m not the guy that stands outside of computer stores the night before with strangers in the rain waiting to get my hands on the next product someone spoke about from above a turtleneck. I don’t even have a smartphone. So, you’re wondering, how can I be a technology lover? Well, I really enjoy computers. I learned an entirely new OS and starting teaching myself programming languages when I … Continue reading

Death in the Family

As I write this I am sitting not in Texas, but in Iowa. My wife’s grandfather passed away and we are back in town for the funeral. Our son’s great-grandfather has moved on. The difficulties were/are many: A near one-thousand mile car drive? CHECK. Missing a week of work? CHECK. Missing a week of school? CHECK. One three month old child? CHECK. …who isn’t “road-tested”? CHECK. With all of these really good reasons for not making the trip why would we actually decide to do it? Family. My wife was understandably close to all of her grandparents. This closeness also … Continue reading

The Horror of Cyber Bullying

I read a story today of a 15 year old girl who committed suicide this week because of the relentless bullying she was getting both at school and online. A month before her death she posted a youtube video sharing her story in hopes that it would help someone else going through the same thing. I’m not sure why her story stuck with me so much, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it all night. This girl was absolutely beautiful and incredibly talented, yet even in death, there were many cruel comments posted on the video. I … Continue reading
