The End of Daycare

This week my son had the most important unofficial graduation of his life. He “graduated” from daycare. You might remember our hesitation about placing our son in daycare months ago. Despite our overall positive experience with the daycare itself and the daycare providers we are certainly overjoyed to have finally reached the summer months and reconnect with our sons weekday activities in the comforts of home. While my wife was in a meeting this past week I took our nearly-out-of-daycare son to a nearby park and places his little body on the teeter-totter. He instinctively grabbed onto the little bars … Continue reading

The Daycare: One Month

We’ve had our son in daycare for a month now and I must admit things have been much better than we could have imagined. Our fears of leaving the care of our son in someone else’s hands has not completely gone away but we are quite comfortable and confident in the staff at our daycare (even if we still think we’d be doing a better job ourselves). That said, the experience has been a positive one for both our son and his parents. This marks the one month reflection of a difficult decision. One month ago we were worried about … Continue reading

The Daycare & The Cold

Less than 1 week into Daycare and my son is already sick. I suppose this should be a common enough occurrence but it certainly doesn’t make Mom & Dad feel any better about putting our child into daycare. Is the environment clean? As far as I know. Is the staff trained? Yes. Are they kind and caring? They certainly seem to be. So what is the problem? I’m really not sure. Perhaps it is the other kids. My son has been super healthy since his birth… so hearing him snore because his sinuses are clogged is not a pretty sight … Continue reading

Daycare Day 1: Evening

It turns out that the day didn’t go badly for my son at all. The accounts given to us by the employees and the administrator were extremely positive. They told us that he had the best first day of any of the babies at this relatively new facility. That sure does make Mom & Dad feel good. That evening my son was laughing with glee and giggling more than he ever had before. He was happy. He was at his house with his parents and they were spending time with him. I’m not certain that this wasn’t influenced heavily by … Continue reading

Daycare Day 1: Morning

The morning came particularly quickly on my son’s first day of daycare. Despite my wife’s best efforts to have everything neatly organized in bags near the door the morning still felt rushed, uncomfortable, and different. I had a little talk with my son. As a father I felt it was my duty to tell him that today was going to be different. I told him that we weren’t abandoning him and that his mom was going to check in on him at lunchtime and pick him up early. I told him that he would be with other babies and some … Continue reading

The Daycare in the Future

Today a future reality became present one, momentarily, as my wife and I briefly toured the daycare that will house our son at the beginning of next semester. We entered through the doors, took off our coats and hats, abandoned our stroller, and walked into the room for the babies who cannot yet crawl. While my wife and I knew the day would come when our son would need to be in daycare our visit today made that future reality much clearer. My wife and I are not excited about the prospect of daycare. We’d much rather have our son … Continue reading

Daytime Playoff Baseball

What a wonderful time of year. There is a chill in the air, the colors in the trees are as varied as your toddler’s moods and there is baseball being played under the still warm afternoon sun. Major League Baseball games, once played primarily during the day, have long since abandoned their core daytime audience – kids – and now schedule 95% of all games during the evening. Sure, the primetime slots maximize ad revenue but those late games have done more to hurt the sport then most folks realize – as most of today’s youth would name another sport … Continue reading

Top Three Benefits of Holiday Jobs

While you’re not likely to receive many standard employee benefits as a seasonal hire, there are benefits to obtaining a holiday job that many people don’t realize. Great Potential If you are hired as a temporary holiday employee, you might just find that you like the company. Many employers offer excellent opportunities for advancement once you are considered a permanent hire. Holiday jobs can create great opportunities for people who have been laid off or otherwise lost a job, for stay home parents re-entering the workforce, or for young people who are just starting out, to eventually land a great … Continue reading

Parenting Techniques Outside of the United States

The things that you consider to be typical parenting techniques might seem strange to people who live outside of the United States. Likewise, some of what parents in other countries do may seem weird to parents here. It’s all a matter of perspective. What works well for parents in one place might not be acceptable to do in other places. NPR has an article titled Global Parenting Habits that Haven’t Caught On In the U.S.. It was written by Emily Lodish and posted on August 12, 2014. In it, she points out some parenting techniques that are commonly practiced in … Continue reading

Child Care As A Home-Based Business

I don’t know how it is where you live, but I do know that where I live there is a shortage of day care. Many families in my town want to find quality child care so that both parents can work, but there are not nearly enough spots available in the local day care programs. If something similar is happening in your community, you may be able to find work helping one or more of the families that are caught in the day care crunch. High quality, private child care is something that many parents would love to have for … Continue reading
