December Laughing

December is already here and it is a bit alarming. This means that classes are coming to a close, final papers are needing to be written, and my son is getting even older. He’ll be 4 months old very soon. My mother tells me that 4 months old is her favorite age for babies because they’re responsive and interactive. They’ll laugh and talk and play but they’re not moving themselves around yet and are still cute cute babies. This is not to say that she hates the other stages of infancy because she just loves babies and certainly loves her … Continue reading

The Marriage Week in Review December 2-8

Good morning and welcome to our second week in review for the twelfth month of the year. Today is December 9th and we have just fifteen shopping days left until Christmas. It was a very eventful week for me since I wrote the last week in review as I detailed in several entries over the last week and for all of the kind thoughts and well wishes sent my way – thank you. So without further ado, let’s get into our week in review: Saturday, December 2 Is this your First Christmas as a Couple? Here’s an Idea! Sherry discusses … Continue reading

Baby’s 9 Month Well Visit

So, yesterday, my baby had his 9 month well child visit at the pediatrician’s office. The 9 month visit is usually an easy one because no vaccines are involved. So, there was a lot of just talking and visiting with the pediatrician. My baby put on the charms. He was laughing and smiling like crazy at the doctor who has a habit of working hard to get the smiles out of my kids. He acts pretty silly at times, and that is something my kids love. We also discussed eating. Solids have been a little bit of a challenge for … Continue reading

Winter Illnesses and the Home – Based Professional

Despite unseasonably warm temperatures and a lack of snowfall in some places where there is usually abundant snow by now, it is still winter. This means that it is cold and flu season. Employees in offices everywhere are sanitizing, covering coughs, hand washing, and wiping down surfaces in an attempt to avoid getting a cold or the flu. They are also debating with themselves in the morning when they wake up feeling not so wonderful about whether or not they should go to work. On one hand, they need the money and the boss needs their work. On the other … Continue reading

This is Boys on Adolescence

Once I saw a great illustration of the difference between men and women. It was grossly simplistic, of course, but like all great illustrations, it captured the core of so many things in a single image. Actually, there were two images. The first image was of a rectangular box. It was completely covered in dials, knobs, levers, and latches. The heading on the image was “Woman.” The second image was of the same rectangular box — but with only a single on/off switch in the middle. The heading on the image was “Man.” I remember laughing out loud when I … Continue reading

Enjoying the Shadows

Yesterday my son and I ventured outside to enjoy the relatively enjoyable temperature, the sunshine, and some free time together. Since the weather has been uncharacteristically cold and snowy for this part of the country we haven’t been spending as much time outside as we’d like. Coupled with the increasingly busy schedule my wife and I have been encountering lately our family time has mostly been spent cooking, eating, and trying to relax & do work at the same time (something that doesn’t really make sense or necessarily work). As always, I noticed changes in my son from before the … Continue reading

Grandmas Know Better Than You Do

Two instances over Christmas spent with family has made me realize something: Grandma’s know stuff. They know useful stuff and they know it better than Mom & Dad do. Sure, we spend all day with the baby and do all of the important stuff, but Grandmother’s know something extra. Grandmother’s have seen the whole picture. They can separate the piece from the puzzle and know a number of tricks to make certain things go much more smoothly. This all started when my Mother-in-law did something so simple with my son that caused him to laugh uncontrollably almost instantaneously. Remember way … Continue reading

The Best Kind of Distraction

My son is adorable. He’s just recently joined the “4 months old” club and I couldn’t be prouder of him. He sits up better every day. He’ll look into your eyes and smile. He’ll laugh. He’ll play with toys you put in front of him. He’s gaining talents in every area. It is amazing to me that he’s cuter each and every day. He shares that trait with my wife. So allow me to paint a picture for you. This is a cautionary tale to all parents of newborns and I share it to caution you of the dangers that … Continue reading

“A Christmas Carol”: Spectacle with Substance

The snowy cobblestone street is packed with vendors, stalls, patrons, and carriages. Shawl-wrapped women brandish roasted chestnuts in bundles of newspaper, crying, “A shilling a piece.” Men in black silk top-hats push their way through the crowds, eager to return to their business while children scamper from one end of the road to another, laughing and shrieking in play. As the road widens and the market fades to the distance, the sound of the children’s boots smacking on cobblestone slows, then halts. A lone, hunched, and gnarled figure hobbles across the street, causing the children to retreat as quickly and … Continue reading

The Mis-Naming of Cats

I’ve been working at the cats only boarding facility since December. In the last few months, I’ve met cats with all sorts of creative, funny, or unique names. Some of my favorites are Squad Car, Count Catula, and Big Kitty. Today, we were expecting a guest with the most unique name of all — a cat named Hot Guy. To be honest, I imagined a cat named Hot Guy belonging to a college kid. Wouldn’t you love to call home and tell your parents that your roommate is a hot guy? We were expecting four cats in this morning, and … Continue reading
