Donuts with Dad

During the last week of my daughter’s school, her kindergarten teacher organized an event called “Donuts with Dad.” My wife had attended “Muffins with Mom” about two weeks earlier, so the pressure was on dad to come through. It was a busy week for me. I was starting a new time job, not to mention I still had to maintain all of the other appointments and activities for my family. Consequently, when I heard about this new activity with her kindergarten class I was not too excited about going at first – until I got there. When I arrived at … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Under Siege

On back-to-back days this week, co-workers of mine generously supplied donuts for breakfast. I was helpless as the sugary treats were lingering around my cubicle for 48 hours. I think I had about five donuts between Thursday morning and Friday afternoon. Not that I am Superman, but if I were – donuts would certainly be my kryptonite. Fortunately, I combated the donut attack by walking a few miles on Saturday morning during, and in preparation for, our community-wide yard sale. I was up at the ungodly hour of 5 am yesterday dragging my rear-end and our merchandise from the garage … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: How have you been?

The little hiatus is over here at Families.com and I would love to tell you that during the break my eating and exercise routine has been on-point, but I do not fancy myself a liar, so I will say no such thing. To be honest, I have been having a rough stretch recently with sweets, cookies, donuts and soda entering my body at a way-too frequent clip. I have also been seen eating potato chips (which I do not really even enjoy) and ice cream (Girl Scout Cookie Thin Mint – which I enjoy very much. I am helpless to … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Out of Control

I have fallen off the wagon and was then promptly run over by the wagon as it backed up. After navigating the birthday party food-spread with minimal trouble over the weekend, I have since consumed six pieces of pizza, a large bowl of mint ice cream, two cups of Pepsi and more mini-chocolate donuts than I care to mention (to be honest, I lost count somewhere in the mid-teens). Granted, this was not all at one sitting (that would be disgusting), but it has been my story over the past 72-plus hours. Making this even more tragic is that my … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: I Love Food

I love food – there is no other way to type it. For example, at twelve years old I opened my first checking account and I was put on the spot when told to select my very own four-digit personal identification number. I had never made such a decision – what to do? I ended up going with the only four letters/numbers that seemed personal enough to me. That’s right, my first ATM card PIN was ‘FOOD’ (3663). So you know I was pretty hardcore into eating as a child! When I would eat fruits or vegetables as a child … Continue reading

Work It

If I took my daughter to work with me, this is what she’d be doing all day Yup, knocking back donuts. It takes more skill than you’d think. Look at those jaw muscles in action. Is that sweat on her temple? No, I don’t work in law enforcement, unless you call breaking up fights and threatening jail time for pint-sized cookie thieves, policing. Rather, I work a series of mundane jobs in order to pay the bills. The lack of excitement on my job fronts is why I didn’t partake in Take Your Child to Work Day. On the fourth … Continue reading

Grammy and Papa Visit

My husband’s parents drove from Nevada to Texas to spend time with us and see the girls. They arrived on Tuesday and came over to our house after settling in at the hotel. I had been telling Jessie and E that Grammy and Papa were coming to visit. Jessie was really excited. When Grammy and Papa rang the doorbell Jessie started yelling that she was scared and ran to hide in her room. She was such a silly girl. It did not take long for Jessie to stop being silly and want to be where Grammy and Papa were. E … Continue reading

Data Entry Scams

Data entry is one of the most prevalent job openings on the Internet. Every job board you go to has got ten, twenty, thirty job openings for data entry, sometimes even more. I have bad news: I am willing to bet dollars to donuts that 99.99% of these jobs are scams. Makes ya want to sit down and just cry, I know. The way the data entry scam works is you read an ad saying that this company is hiring typists, you can make really good money for almost nothing, and all you have to do to get the info … Continue reading
