Affordable Fall Family Fun

The first day of autumn is just two weeks away, and just because Wal-Mart and Target already have their Christmas displays up doesn’t mean you should fast forward over this wonderful season. Fall is a great time to bond with your family in the great outdoors before Old Man Winter arrives and your kids refuse to move away from the warm TV. To help spice up the season, consider attending ones of the following fall-themed parades, festivals and kid-friendly events that won’t bust your family’s budget: Half Moon Art and Pumpkin Festival, San Francisco, California: On October 13-14, you can … Continue reading

A Family Outing Part III

After the sea lion exhibit, our son began to run with his daddy in tow towards the goats and another strange goat like animal (el packa?). The goats were kept in a fenced area but there were squares cut into the fence so that the goats and El Packa could poke their heads out to be petted (and fed) by the zoo goers. Our son immediately run up to the goats and said hello and pet one of the goats nose. I tried to get a photo of our son with a baby goat standing right up to the fence … Continue reading

A Family Outing Part II

Seeing the monkeys through the glass up close and personal was a really neat experience for our son. He had never been that close to monkey before but he wanted to see them without the glass as well. The monkey exhibit was one of the larger exhibits (I guess monkeys need more room to play). My husband put our son back on his shoulders and they looked at the monkeys from every possible angle until our son was ready to move on to a different exhibit. I did not think that the next exhibit would be the excavator working on … Continue reading

A Family Outing

It is not often that we have family outings. Typically I take the kids on outings with my sister’s or with friends. My husband rarely accompanies us on our fun trips to play and see interesting things. After working until one in the morning four days a week, I try to give him as much time as possible to work on his dissertation by taking the kids out without him. Today was different. I decided that we needed to do something fun as a family. Right after breakfast I got the kids dressed and the camera packed and we headed … Continue reading

A Family’s Tragic Loss

Most of us are familiar with the Biblical warning: “Watch therefore, for you don’t know the day nor the hour.” But, how many of us really take the directive to heart? For parents, life often moves at warp speed and the chaos that underscores daily survival can be overwhelming at times. So much so that most of us tend to lose sight of the big picture. I am guilty as charged. However, yesterday’s horrific accident in which seven members from a single family–spanning three generations–died when their SUV plummeted off a highway and landed in the Bronx Zoo, provided a … Continue reading

A Day at the Zoo Part I

We have a zoo in our city. It is not a big zoo by any means, but it does have more than enough animals to entertain a toddler. I am not a particular fan of animals; I remember going to this same zoo as a child and being scared to death especially by the goats in the petting part of the zoo. The cost of admission to this zoo is more than a movie ticket (something my husband and I never spend money on). Thanks to my very generous in-laws, we have a year long family pass to the zoo … Continue reading

Trunk or Treat Time

This coming Saturday, my family and I will be participating in our church’s annual Trunk or Treat event. This is our second year doing it. Along with the trunks to treat from, there will be free food, music, games, free photos and more. I can’t wait. In case you aren’t familiar with what a Trunk or Treat is, let me explain. Trunkers bring a car or other vehicle and decorate it. The Treaters go around to the various trunks and collect their candy and treats. It is safer than going to unfamiliar houses, and it is a lot of fun. … Continue reading

Family Fitness With Your Toddler

If we want to prevent future health problems in our children, then we need to be encouraging fitness while they are young. If they start off life with exercise and healthy eating, they are more likely to continue it into their adult years. So I am going to be writing a series on how you can incorporate family fitness into your home. And believe it or not, it starts with your toddlers. Once children start walking, they have the opportunity to begin a healthy lifestyle. That means allowing your child to walk, not always confining them to a stroller. If … Continue reading
