Food Introductions

My son has recently started eating food. Well, This isn’t exactly true. For some reason this Dad kind of thought that one day they just started putting cereal into their mouths through some sort of magical “growing up” process that occurred on one specific day. One day my son is just nursing; the next day he is eating steaks. I’m joking (a little) but I really thought my son would be eating all sorts of baby foods and other items one we put the first taste of avocado into his mouth. I was quite wrong. The introduction of solid foods … Continue reading

A Playdate for the Girls Part II

After the initial tumbling introductions, the girls begin to play… but not with each other. The girls were all clad in cute girly attire and new shoes. My sister’s daughter, who is the oldest at fourteen months, just got her first pair of sparkly tennis shoes two weeks prior to our playdate. By now she is a very accomplished walker even though she did not start to walk until after her first birthday. With her advanced walking skills she kind of assumed the role of queen bee. My husband’s sister-in-law’s daughter had also recently gotten a new pair of shoes … Continue reading

Nine Months Old

Now that my daughter is nine months old, I am surprised and almost shocked at how much she has grown, changed, and learned in just nine short months! Upon further contemplation, it took only nine short months to grow my dear sweet daughter from microscopic cells to a viable baby. As my daughter rounded the nine month mark, she had mastered many mobile skills including speed crawling and stairs climbing. With her ever improving mobile skills, she is into anything and everything. She squeezes under things (like the kitchen cart/island and the bookshelves) and climbs into things (like boxes and … Continue reading

Preschool Etiquette: Table Manners

One of the most popular areas of teaching etiquette is table manners. We all want to sit and eat with others who are clean, respectful, and enjoyable to be around. Poor table manners can turn a lovely meal into a disaster. Kids have a hard time understanding why they shouldn’t spit out food they don’t like or yell at the table. Kids have a tendency to do as they please. So it is a parent’s job to instruct them and teach them the table manner rules. Table Manner Rules Sit while you are at the table. Do not stand on … Continue reading

Shepherd’s Pie

When I was growing up there always seemed to be this stigma about “healthy” food on the sitcoms. What was the stigma? Easy: kids didn’t eat “healthy” food. This was repeated in the literature I read as a child, as well as in the offhand remarks other adults (even teachers) would make regarding so-called “healthy” food. Often-times a synonym of healthy food would be vegetables (especially green vegetables). These synonyms were like a shorthand for sitcom writers and adults alike to describe the behavior of children. You grew, as a child or adult, to understand the motivations of the kid … Continue reading

The Baby Shower Part II

Things were definitely coming together for the baby shower and we only had a few more things to do before the guests began to arrive. Soon enough our oldest sister arrived with the punch bowl. Since it was fifteen minutes before the shower was to begin, I instructed one of my younger sisters on how to make the punch. The end result is a delightful pink colored beverage and many guests comment on how good it tastes! Everything is ready and the guests begin to arrive. My very pregnant sister is in place near the door to greet and chat … Continue reading

You Are Now Entering the World of Solids

We decided to start giving our daughter some “real” food last month. We previously had decided to wait until she was about a year old, but our curiosity got the best of us. Shortly after she passed the 8 month mark, we began the journey into the world of solids foods. We bypassed the rice cereal and canned baby foods and went straight to making our own baby food. We had read online and heard from trusted acquaintances that avocados are the perfect food, for both babies and adults, so we decided avocados would be the first food hitting her … Continue reading

Is Rice Cereal Necessary?

Parents often look forward to each month of their baby’s life with excitement and anticipation. They look at charts and articles that spell out what the typical baby will be able to accomplish each week or month of his life. Moms and dads around the world cheer wildly when their brilliant baby reaches the next big milestone: smiling, supporting the head, rolling over, or sitting up for the first time. Parents go on treasure hunts in their children’s mouths, hoping to feel the sharpness of the first tooth. One “first” that many parents look forward to – at least first-time … Continue reading
