Happier Mornings

Are your mornings hectic and stressful? Mine used to be so bad that I almost dreaded them. Hailey and I would get our day off to a bad start because we would wind up snapping at each other. When I was married we all left the house at the same time, this meant that I had help getting Hailey motivated and out the door. Once I was divorced it was just me. No matter what time we got up Hailey would drag her feet until it was time to walk out the door then we would spend another ten minutes … Continue reading

Happier Mornings

One of the greatest difficulties for our family over the past year and half has been the ever-changing situation for our son. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you will remember our hesitation to put our son in daycare for a limited time. When his brief time in daycare was finished we were very excited to see it go despite the fact that it was better than we had expected. At any rate, our work schedules have been in constant rotation with frequent changes. At one point my wife had our son with her at work, then … Continue reading

Who Will Get Up With The Baby?

In the past, I have always nursed my babies, so I have always been the one to get up with them. Now that I am bottle feeding, we are trying to figure out what works best for my husband and I so that we both can get some much needed sleep. With three little ones to take care of, sleep is hard to come by these days. What has been working for us is that my husband gets up at the first feeding, and then I get up at the second. This is mostly because I do better in the … Continue reading

Finding Joy

When I got divorced I thought I was never going to find happiness again. I thought that the only thing that could possibly make me happy was to have my little family together. That first month after the split I could hardly get out of bed in the mornings. How was I supposed to take care of this little two and a half year old baby if I couldn’t even take care of myself anymore? I was completely devastated. I felt like my one chance at happiness had just walked out the door. Time went on and I realized that … Continue reading

The Small Job

Our little home doesn’t have much of a backyard. It doesn’t have much of a sideyard. It just doesn’t have much of a yard at all. While our son enjoys the outdoors we’re not within walking distance to any parks and sometimes, by virtue of our one vehicle situation and various scheduling issues, we’re not able to make it to the large open areas that parks provide. We’re not always able to find the swings and wave to the ducks. Sometimes it really is too cold (with the heavy wind) to be running around an open field in any amount … Continue reading

Christmas Day 2010

2am: Christmas day was supposed to start here but our alarm didn’t go off. More at 3:42am. 3:42am: This is not when we were supposed to wake up to put the brisket in the crock pot but that is when it happened. Our big meal will happen at 1:42pm now. Oh, well. 6:30am: My wife has been awake for 30 minutes and our son just started crying. Waking up quickly I wished him a Merry Christmas and we began our day with 30 minutes in the bed relaxing, talking and nursing. He was happy. I was still asleep but there … Continue reading

Engagement Rings: Size Doesn’t Matter

The other day a neighbor invited me to a jewelry party she was having. I appreciate a stunning piece of jewelry but I don’t wear very much of it. I decided to go, however, because this neighbor is pretty nice and since we’re not moving back to Jacksonville I’m free to open myself up to making friends again. (I hadn’t been letting myself do that because it’s hard on me having to say goodbye.) So I go to the party, don’t know anyone except the neighbor, and immediately realize I’m under-dressed. My outfit was fine, but my accessories were dearly … Continue reading

Family Bowling Night

About ten months ago, my daughter was invited to a birthday party at a bowling alley. She wasn’t even sure what bowling was, but since it was my husband’s turn to take her to the birthday party, she trooped off with a present under one arm. She came back, all alight and happy about the day and desperately wanting to go bowling again. Family Bowling Days A lot of bowling alleys are reinventing themselves to make them more family friendly. Two that I knew of in Virginia didn’t allow smoking on days that they were asking families to bring in … Continue reading

A Whole New You

I got off to a late start today, so I apologize if I come across as brusque here. Late starts always make me cranky. I’m an early riser by nature and I’m usually up and working by 4 most mornings. Today I didn’t even roll over until 6. That’s usually a bad omen for me! However, in the course of my morning I got my daughter up and ready for her preschool and then I drove here there. My dog Max went along for the ride. Max is a 9 year-old English Shepherd and they tend to be more of … Continue reading
