Happy Thanksgiving 2010

1am: Dad goes to bed after trying desperately to get some reading done prior the Thanksgiving. Trying not to do any work on the holiday itself. Everyone else was asleep. 6am: An alarm goes off that we forgot to turn off in order to sleep in. Oh well. So it goes. It was apparently turned off mid-sleep as no one really remembers how it stopped. 8:30am: Mom wakes up Dad. They scurry about the house as their son sleeps soundly. They ready the turkey. Dad’s hands are freezing as the insides of the turkey are still frozen as he runs … Continue reading

Grilled Cheese

Recently, in a moment of horror for all involved parties (myself and our son) I went to the cupboard looking for lunch on a cold day to find that our “go to” cold-weather meal had been all used up. The meal, of course, was cheesy shells. Glorious pasta drenched in lovely cheese. It’s warm, it reminds me of my own childhood, and (as it comes in a box) it’s pretty easy for this failing “chef” to create. Our son really does like it when it is put in front of him and I was hoping to do just that on … Continue reading

Fire

Natural elements are always interesting. They are particularly interesting to children. Whether it is their first bath, the feeling of dirt, or the wind blowing through the trees the elements are fascinating things to behold. Just as our anscestors rejoiced when they discovered the ability to harness fire so too do children rejoice in that magical element flickering in the distance. Something amazing takes place when viewing those bright, colorful, moving flames for the first time up close. This past week the temperature dropped enough for us to rationalize lighting up the fireplace. Our son was thrilled. He eagerly stood … Continue reading

Giving Thanks

As Thanksgiving quickly approaches, we all do what we usually do (besides panicking that the holidays are almost here), we think about what we are grateful for. During the year, we spend our time being busy with the to do lists of the day and rarely take the time to truly be restful and focused on the good in our lives, which means that sometimes we let the bad outweigh the good. As the parent of a child with a chronic health condition, I have numerous opportunities throughout the day to be angry, frustrated, annoyed, and sad. And I have … Continue reading

Have a Merry Minted Christmas

I don’t drink, but walking into Target or Wal-Mart right now makes me want to run home and pour myself a boot of something stronger than beer. Tis the season for breakouts and breakdowns. Seriously. Have you been to the mall recently? Retailers have dumped their Halloween costumes and candy; bypassed Thanksgiving paraphernalia; and are shoving Santa down customers’ collective throats. Fa-la-la-la. We’re not even 85 hours into November and I already feel my inner Christmas Grinch bubbling up from the bowels of my being. How can I feel so behind on Christmas preparations when I still have buckets of … Continue reading

Thinking About Announcing Your Pregnancy on Turkey Day?

John Milton said, “Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.” This time of year, those of us who are expecting have abundantly more to be thankful for, and what provokes “transcendent moments of awe” more than bringing a new life into the world? Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays that does not center around gifts, but rather focuses on bringing family together and expressing gratitude for the things in life that matter. I can’t think of a more perfect occasion to share … Continue reading
