Little Singer

During the past week I’ve been excited by my favorite band releasing a new album. It was a wonderful surprise and I couldn’t have been happier. Their last album was over three years ago and music is a powerful thing. They’ve been a part of my life for well over a decade. Strangely enough, they have a part in the story of our son’s life too. When our son was in utero and breech we were given a variety of things to try in order to coax him into the right position. For a while my wife spent time upside … Continue reading

Folk Singer Odetta Holmes Dies at 77

Folk singer and civil rights activist Odetta Holmes, known professionally as Odetta, died this week of heart disease at the age of 77. Odetta influenced a generation of singers such as Janis Joplin, Tracy Chapman, Janis Ian, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez with her folk, blues, and gospel classics. Dylan was quoted as saying, “The first thing that turned me on to folk singing was Odetta. From Odetta, I went to Harry Belafonte, the Kingston Trio, little by little uncovering more as I went along.” By the way, I missed my change to blog about the October 1, 2008 passing … Continue reading

Daytime TV Going a Little Bit Country

He may have lost to British tabloid editor Piers Morgan on NBC’s “The Celebrity Apprentice,” but Trace Adkins’ consolation prize is going to make millions of soap fans very happy. The award-winning country crooner and beloved “Celebrity Apprentice” contestant went from being fired by Donald Trump in primetime to being hired by CBS for a stint on the most popular daytime serial on TV. According to CBS executives, Adkins has been tapped to appear on “The Young and the Restless” where he will sing his latest hit, “You’re Gonna Miss This,” from his CD “American Man, Greatest Hits Vol. II.” … Continue reading

Celebrity REAL or RUMOR: Eva Pregnancy and R.E.M. Singer’s Jury Duty

No, Desperate Housewives’ Eva Longoria-Parker isn’t expecting a baby. Rather, she says she’s just bloated. Or at least she was when paparazzi snapped a shot of her that has been making the rounds on the Internet under the headline: “Eva’s Pregnant!” You’ve got to love a star who denies a pregnancy rumor by insisting that the little extra bulge around her belly is just extra helpings of home cooking and not evidence of impending motherhood. “I’ve been cooking and eating, cooking and eating. I keep telling everyone that I’ve gained 10 pounds just being on strike,” Longoria-Parker told a band … Continue reading

INXS Pays Tribute to Former Lead Singer

I don’t know if you remember when INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence died, but I do. I loved INXS – they were one of my favorite bands of the 80s. And I thought Michael Hutchence was so sexy. He just had that young Jim Morrison thing going on. But around the mid 90s, the band stopped having radio hits. I mean after all, music had changed. The pop bands of the 80s were out and everyone was into grunge. To add to the fact that his band had fallen a bit from popularity, Michael Hutchence was having problems at home … Continue reading

New Celebrity Moms

The stork has visited Hollywood again. Actress Drew Barrymore has made a remarkable recovery from a troubled child actress with a drug and drinking problem to a beautiful, successful adult actress who recently married and gave birth to her first child. Barrymore married her third husband (first husband Jeremy Thomas lasted less than two months and second husband Tom Green lasted a little over a year) Will Kopelman in June 2012. Although Barrymore was obviously with child, the couple didn’t announce her pregnancy. They simply went on with their wedding and lives until she gave birth to a daughter named … Continue reading

An Update on the Michael Jackson’s Insurance Lawsuit

AEG Live, the company that took out a multimillion dollar insurance policy with Lloyd’s of London on the “This Is It” concerts has decided to drop its claim. Supposedly, this doesn’t have anything to do with leaked email that revealed that the concert promoter had doubts about Michael Jackson’s health. Let me start with a little background information. In 2009, Michael Jackson was scheduled to preform a series of concerts at the O2 Arena in London, England. There were going to be a total of 50 concerts. This was the “This Is It” tour. The purpose was to raise enough … Continue reading

Cheap and Creative

Tis the season for super savings on school staples. With the summer coming to a rapid end, just about every discount retailer known to man is offering spectacular sales on back-to-school items, from spiral notebooks for a penny to double-pack Sharpies for a mere 25 cents. In most cases, the deepest discounts are reserved for generic items. If you are on a budget, then you’re probably not worried about getting a notebook covered with cute animated characters or the latest and greatest teen heartthrob. However, your kid might. Fortunately, with a little creativity, you and your child can turn boring … Continue reading

Doc McStuffins: A Revolutionary Role Model

For once Disney seems to be doing something right. Its primary role models for girls have, for years, been princesses. Sure, the ones created in the past couple years have been more dynamic, with more in their lives than just wishing that “someday my prince will come,” but at the end of the day, they’re princesses. That’s usually the notes on which their movies end. They’ve found men or are living in a castle: that’s the happily ever after. The princesses are also all so very “white as snow.” Most of the princesses are white, and everyone else just gets … Continue reading

Material Mom

Besides the fact that we are both moms and were born on August 16th, there is very, very little I have in common with Madonna. At least that’s what I thought before I caught a snippet of an interview the “Material Girl” just did with NBC’s “Rock Center.” Unlike Madonna I am not an international entertainment superstar, I don’t have arms that look like Rambo’s and I wholeheartedly oppose yoga as a way to add balance to my life. However, I recently discovered that when it comes to parenting, we have this in common: We would rather be dead than … Continue reading
