Mickey’s Magic Show

I’ve written about one of Disney’s most popular live shows, Disney on Ice, but now I’m going to put a spotlight on their newest production, Mickey’s Magic Show. The live performance, currently on tour, takes all the talk about Disney’s magic literally. While Mickey is obviously the master of ceremonies and grand magician for the show, several other Disney characters and their friends participate as well. First guests fall down the rabbit hole to Wonderland. The Mad Hatter uses his own silly type of magic to play with the White Rabbit, and the Queen of Hearts brings out her cards … Continue reading

Magic Trick: Rings

My son has been using his hands more and more. While he’s not entirely capable of grabbing or picking things up on his own he’ll often throw his hand in a direction roughly towards object he wishes to interact with. There is a plush toy that one of his grandmothers bought him that hangs above one of his little swing thing and he’s been punching it lately to get it to rattle and move. Also hanging above his swing thing is an assortment of rings that his other grandmother bought him. Several of them are linked together and they hang … Continue reading

Shanghai Disneyland to Open in 2015

In 2015, a brand new Disneyland will open its gates.  Don’t believe it?  Did you think you would have heard of something so momentous happening sooner?   At the end of 2015, Shanghai Disneyland will be open for business. It was easy to forget about the at-times controversial park, because it’s been years since we’ve heard more than a peep about it.  But now that we’re getting closer to its opening date, more details are beginning to trickle in.  The Disney Parks blog has a snapshot of the Shanghai Disneyland model, or at least a portion of the model, focusing on … Continue reading

Disney Christmas Day Parade Filming Dates

Big news first: I know the filming dates for the 2012 Disney-ABC Christmas Day Parade. This is an elusive event where the tickets go on sale and sell out almost immediately. This year I have an inside line on the taping; the daughter of a friend of mine is going to dance in the parade. They’re taping the last week of November/the first weekend in December. The big day should be Saturday, December 1. I couldn’t verify this information online, because Disney hasn’t posted anything official about it yet. They probably won’t until November. But I can guarantee that the … Continue reading

Creativity on a Budget

There is a fallacy that scrapbooking is a rich person’s hobby. Interestingly, some of the most amazing layouts I’ve ever laid eyes on were not crafted from expensive materials. Rather, the page designs were pieced together with a few affordable supplies and a lot of creativity. These tough economic times have forced many scrappers to employ money-saving tricks in order to keep their books full. Some have turned to buying in bulk, especially for basic materials, such as cardstock, stickers and patterned paper. However, instead of forking over a ton of money for a large amount of the standard supplies, … Continue reading

Reading the Stageplay

I’ve always been an entertaining kind of guy. Some have interchanged “entertaining” with “annoying” but you get my point. It’s probably why I got into music, magic, juggling, and eventually theatre. I’ve always enjoyed making people laugh, smile, and generally enjoy themselves. A few years ago I was fortunate to be in yet another play portraying yet another character. This particular character had a higher voice than my own, a bizarre way of putting often surprising words together, and an even stranger accent. All of this was rolled up into a character in (you guessed it) a comedy. The comedy, … Continue reading

Juggling

When I was in fifth grade I learned to juggle three balls. This was a great success for me. My mother had taught me long ago how to juggle two balls. I’d been interested in performing since I was young and juggling certainly fit the bill. As such, I admired jugglers and magicians and all sorts of performers when I was young, and each time I saw a juggler successfully juggle three balls I felt a pain in my heart because I couldn’t do it. But then came fifth grade. Then came my juggling, magician, math teacher. Then came the … Continue reading

The Wet Rabbit

My first year of graduate school found me on stage in a musical. While things went fine (I can, in fact, sort of sing and dance), it was a surprise to my wife and I that an (at the time) MFA playwright would have his evenings occupied by performance rather than writing. At any rate, it was an experience. I’m not going to qualify it as either good or bad, so we’ll just leave it at experience. Not that I hadn’t sung or danced or acted before (I’d done a lot of it), but this place did things differently. Let’s … Continue reading

The Gift of Self-Entertainment

When I was younger I was sometimes bored. Somehow I imagine this happens to lots of kids but it certainly felt like it was only me who was afflicted at the time. Strangely, I credit many of my successes and talents to these periods of boredness. I can juggle; balance 6ft. ladders (and other objects) on my chin; perform a variety of wonderful coin; card, rope, and other magic tricks; and compose spreadsheets; deal with software issues; and probably some other things I’ve forgotten along the way. The point is this: boredom can be a motivator. Imagine my joy, then, … Continue reading

Christmas: Not Always So Cheery (2)

In our last article on this topic we looked at the high expectations that so many of us have about Christmas and the festive season and why it is not only so stressful for so many of us, but why it is often a time of unhappiness rather than joy. So how can we reduce the stress that many of us feel at Christmas and defuse some of the more unpleasant family disputes that often occur at the very time we should be happy? The answer is partially contained in the last phrase of the previous paragraph. The expectations that … Continue reading
