What Makes a Marriage Work?

With so many marriages ending in divorce, it can leave you to wonder, “What makes a marriage work?” Now I am by no means an expert but I will very soon be celebrating 21 years of marriage, so hopefully I can provide at least some encouragement. Let me start off by saying this. I will never tell someone, “I have been happily married for 20 years.” That would be a lie. While there definitely has been more happiness than not, mixed in have been times where I wondered if we would make it. To pretend otherwise doesn’t really do any … Continue reading

Insurer Shouldn’t have Discriminated Against Moms

Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation (MGIC) was telling women who applied for a mortgage insurance policy that their application would be denied unless they got off of maternity leave and returned to work. Courts decided that this was discrimination against women. MGIC now has to pay some very large settlements. In May of 2010, Carly Neals applied with PNC Mortgage to refinance the mortgage loan on the home that she and her husband own. They live in Wexford, Pennsylvania. PNC determined that since Ms. Neals wanted to borrow 90% of the value of her home that she required private mortgage insurance. … Continue reading

Finding Work That Fits You

Yesterday I wrote about how some jobs that many people consider desirable are actually overrated if you take a closer look at what it is really like to have them. Earlier this month, my colleague Stephanie Romero wrote about a list of the most depressing jobs. I have one job from each of those lists, yet I can honestly say that I love what I do for work. In my opinion, the key to being able to love your work no matter what list or lists it appears on is finding work that fits you well. In order to find … Continue reading

Setting it Aside for the Moment

A partnership comes with challenges as with any relationship. They say when you marry your spouse you are also marrying a family. The same is true on some level in business. If your business partner is having any family or personal issues it may have an effect on your business. Your business may suffer a time when one partner is working alone due to the other partner’s life situation. You will have to decide if that does occur if you are willing to hold down the fort or close up shop if just for a season. In addition a time … Continue reading

Dealing With Interruptions In Your Work Day

Sometimes, it is easy to manage your time when you run a home-based business. You set your work hours, choose a planning and organizing system either on your computer or smartphone or on paper and use it religiously, and there you go. Often, things are not that simple though. Your work time becomes riddled with interruptions and your non-work time also gets invaded by work-related interruptions. What is a home-based professional to do about all of these interruptions – the emails, phone calls, and even mail and package deliveries that seem like small things but can really eat into your … Continue reading

Is Your Home-Based Work Working for Your Family?

Working from home can be a wonderful way for parents to make staying home to care for children make economic sense for their families. Although that is a good thing, it can sometimes be difficult for a parent who is staying home to raise children to decide how to integrate working from home into the rhythm of their days. There is no one set formula for deciding how much work to take on, how many hours to work each day or each week, when to work during the day, or anything else. Add to this the fact that the appropriate … Continue reading

Diary of a Work-at-Home Mom Part 10

This evening is the last evening of our vacation. We will be enjoying breakfast with my dad, my sister, and her fiancee before we hit the road for a five hour drive home tomorrow. As I think about returning home after this vacation, I am unsure about how I will feel once I am back home. We have enjoyed our time here, but it is quite possible that I will welcome a return to our usual schedule. When we return home, I will be returning to my normal work schedule. There is plenty of work waiting for me when I … Continue reading
