How Prepared Are You?

Brush fires are common here in Utah. Our climate is particularly dry and the heat has definitely hit early this year. The number of fires is astounding. Most are kept under control, but what happens when you find your home is threatened by these deadly flames? Many people have been evacuated from their homes tonight as another such fire has come dangerously close to their homes. Whenever I hear of natural disasters such as these I am reminded just how unprepared I really am for them. What do you take with you when you have only moments to clear your … Continue reading

Fathers & Food

Most of us have some memories of our mothers making and serving delicious foods, some every day, some just on the holidays. I grew up a very hungry person, well able to consume large pizzas in a single sitting. So I have compassion for hungry children. My wife was in an exciting, entertaining, and not a fun car accident, and while she recovers, I get to cook most of the household foods. There are some downsides to that. While I like quality, tasty foods, I get so hungry that don’t care, as long as it is healthy enough, rather than … Continue reading

Fatherhood and Doctor’s Visits

We’ve spent a lot of time in doctors’ offices lately. A chiropractor who does many things other than spine adjustments to treat his patients has discovered and helped many of our family health problems. My wife Tristi was in a wreck that totaled both the semi truck and the Hyundai her friend drove. So we’re experienced with both getting well, and getting vehicles off crowded, icy roads. Visits to doctors’ offices are usually done by the children’s mother. As our family roles change, or as semis are taken out by Hyundais, fathers also get to bring their children to visit … Continue reading

I’m Going to Be a Father?

When my wife, Tristi, told me she was expecting, I have to admit, I wasn’t very positive at first. I had been fired my job ten days before getting married, which was about two months before this, and had no way to support my family. I’d been looking for work ever since. We had moved to a tiny attic apartment close to the place of work that had laid me off, and we then had to pay for additional gas in order to get to other jobs. I didn’t realize this was an opportunity to make good the mistakes my … Continue reading

Prepared Father?

Becoming a father was not foremost on my mind when I was growing up. Even the thought of beginning a relationship with a member of the opposite sex gave me so much stress, I avoided it. And yet I knew I probably would marry and have children, and I wanted certain things for them. I wasn’t much of a Scout, either, for a whole host of reasons, and so didn’t practice the Scout motto “Be Prepared.” This has had some negative effects on my life, as I now see the value of being prepared and the benefits the Boy Scouts … Continue reading

Are You Prepared for an Unexpected Change?

I just read a blog today that talked about changes that occur when a homeschooling mom dies. Being on numerous homeschool email lists, and just being aware of what goes on in homeschooling circles I am well aware that it happens far too often. Not only do homeschool mom’s die, but the fathers can also die unexpectedly, or the family can be thrown into an unexpected illness for any member of the family. A tragic change such as this can also change the school situation. In many cases it can mean the end of homeschooling. If you do not want … Continue reading

Are you prepared to say ‘No?’

Sometimes being a good parent means saying ‘no,’ sometimes it means disciplining a child. But as a columnist, Jo Boole, in our local paper pointed out on Friday it seems parents have forgotten how, or are frightened of, saying ‘no.’ As Christians we should realize that saying ‘no’ is part of being a good parent. Look at the example we have of our Heavenly Father. Sometimes God says ‘no’ to us, because what we ask for is not in our best interests. Sometimes God has to draw us aside and discipline us, Hebrews 12:7-11. Should we treat our children any … Continue reading

Are You Prepared For The Cost In Following Jesus?

Anything worthwhile in life never comes without cost. It may not be a cost in monetary terms or an investment in time put into a work situation or relationship. Are you prepared for the cost in following Jesus? Lets’ see what help we can find from Mark 3:20-35 about this. 1. Jesus was doing His Heavenly Father’s will, yet his family decided He ‘was out of his mind,’ verse 21. His family tried to dissuade him. They could not understand His motivation. When we are in the middle of God’s will, where He would have us, we may find there … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Priorities and Preparedness

When we study the principle of self-reliance, we tend to think of it as a worldly law. And yet, the scriptures clearly tell us that Heavenly Father has never given a law that is temporal; all commandments are spiritual in nature (see D&C 29:34). How, then, is a law regarding our worldly state spiritual? President Kimball clearly states that “the highest achievement of spirituality comes as we conquer the flesh.” As we overcome our earthly bodies and worldly desires, we grow to be more spiritual beings. We generally think of this when we consider overcoming habits, but it applies to … Continue reading

Ask a Marriage Blogger – Can We Sing Our Vows?

Good morning, I have an odd question for you. I enjoy reading your blogs and I’ve been reading a great deal about wedding planning in your blog, but there is one question you hadn’t actually addressed. If you have the time, would you mind writing about whether or not a couple can sing their vows to each other rather than repeat the statements made by the minister? My fiancé and I have always had a passion for musicals. I guess this is cheesy, but the idea of having a musical wedding is something that makes us both laugh. In our … Continue reading
