Starting a Motor

I don’t really remember when I was really young. My parents often ask me about this or that family vacation and I truly have a hard time remembering. Sometimes they show me pictures which help my memory a little bit but I am largely unable to mentally recall much of my time when I was young. Part of my problem is reflection. I don’t really take the time to remember my past because my present is so busy. It is hard to commit time to remembering games in the backyard with my brothers when I’m concentrating on managing a 400+ … Continue reading

Rev Up Your Vacation In The Motor City

In just a few days Midwesterners (like me) won’t have to travel to Las Vegas to get a taste of what life is like at a splashy, ultra-luxury resort. Next week, the long awaited, hotly-anticipated $800 million MGM Grand Detroit will open its doors to the public. The resort is the sister property to the famous Las Vegas venue and the first MGM Grand hotel outside of Nevada. The hotel is like nothing we have here in these parts. We’re talking 400 state-of-the-art rooms and suites, celebrity-chef restaurants, a massive casino, and a 20,000-square-foot spa. The new MGM Grand Detroit … Continue reading

In this case, necessity inspired a mother to invent a specialized grocery cart. Drew Ann Long, and her husband, David are the parents of three children. One is a daughter named Caroline. She has Rett Syndrome. It is a … Continue reading

On This Day in History – February 13 – February 17

Looking for fun ideas for your homeschool this week? Give these a try. February 13th – on this date in 1991, the original manuscript of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn was found. Read excerpts of this story aloud, or, if you have younger children, tell them a simplified version. Lash together a raft of sticks and thread, and float it in your bathtub. February 14th – of course today is Valentine’s Day, but many other important things of note have taken place. For instance, on this day in 1920, the League of Women Voters was formed, which changed the face of … Continue reading

Exploring Emotions With Young Children

Young children are a study in differences. Some preschoolers have advanced large motor skills, while some kindergarten students struggle with large motor control. Other children have excellent spatial skills, and still others have the ability to understand emotions in a way that is beyond their years. However, even if they may be at different stages of social and emotional development, all young children can benefit from activities that explore emotions and increase social skills. How can you encourage your young homelearners to explore their emotions? One of the simplest ways to study emotions is through discussion of a picture book. … Continue reading

The Small Job

Our little home doesn’t have much of a backyard. It doesn’t have much of a sideyard. It just doesn’t have much of a yard at all. While our son enjoys the outdoors we’re not within walking distance to any parks and sometimes, by virtue of our one vehicle situation and various scheduling issues, we’re not able to make it to the large open areas that parks provide. We’re not always able to find the swings and wave to the ducks. Sometimes it really is too cold (with the heavy wind) to be running around an open field in any amount … Continue reading

Past and Future Collide

I’ve written before about not remembering my childhood with any sort of accuracy. I’ve forgotten major vacations completely only to be reminded by a photograph that I actually did see Mount Rushmore in person during a vacation over my birthday. While this sort of memory loss is tragic and embarrassing I’ve come up with an at hand rationale for my inability to remember: I had to make room for Grad School. All joking aside, photographs have reminded me of some of the most interesting/wonderful/joyous forgotten moments of my life. Oftentimes those pictures are my primary link to things I’ve forgotten. … Continue reading

’tis Himself

I was recently telling my mother about how much my son looks like himself each day. At first this is strange but hear me out. When my son was born he looked like a baby and he’s been looking like a baby for most of the time I’ve known him. He’s cute like a baby and my wife and I (and our families) attempt to discover features that look like us. He has my wife’s eyes, my hairline, an unconfirmed nose (perhaps a great uncle?) and someone else’s cheekbones. While it is great to see where his genetic inheritance may … Continue reading

Grandmas Know Better Than You Do

Two instances over Christmas spent with family has made me realize something: Grandma’s know stuff. They know useful stuff and they know it better than Mom & Dad do. Sure, we spend all day with the baby and do all of the important stuff, but Grandmother’s know something extra. Grandmother’s have seen the whole picture. They can separate the piece from the puzzle and know a number of tricks to make certain things go much more smoothly. This all started when my Mother-in-law did something so simple with my son that caused him to laugh uncontrollably almost instantaneously. Remember way … Continue reading
