The Superhero and the Damsel

Does your man feel like a superhero? Like he can do anything in your eyes? If you think about it, men like to believe they are conquerors. They like to be viewed as someone who can go above and beyond your expectations. They want to be seen as strong, the one who comes to the rescue. My husband does this in a number of ways. He can open any jar, fix just about anything in our house and can find solutions to virtually any problem. If he could don a cape, I think he might. While most men like to … Continue reading

LAPD Cracks Down on Walk of Fame Superheroes – Part 2

One of my favorite places to visit in Hollywood is the Walk of Fame and Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Yes, I know it’s touristy, but guess what? I am a total tourist when it comes to Hollywood. One of the first times we visited, my husband had his picture taken with a Wonder Woman impersonator. He tipped her, but those days have come to an end as the LAPD has banned the superhero characters from appearing in costume. Christopher Dennis, who has dressed as Superman for 19 years, was arrested earlier this month for loitering. Dennis’ defense was “They charged me … Continue reading

Super Talking

My son is now a “super talker.” This is the term I use to describe the wonderful, varied, and meandering stream of pitches and vowel sounds he is able to create with his beautiful mouth that can also control a smile. This is a major triumph in communication because he is able to more accurately communicate his needs. This is also a triumph because he is experimenting with sound. Since dad is interested in the spoken word (playwright) and sounds (amateur musician) this is an especially wonderful time for me too. Previously he could only let out one single, steady … Continue reading

Talking to Your Kids about Alcohol Abuse

When I was getting ready to go away to college, my parents sat me down and said something to the effect of “you’re probably going to drink when you’re at college, just do it responsibly.” They didn’t know that I’d already been faced with offers of alcohol and turned them down without hesitation. But then, I wouldn’t consider myself a typical teen with a typical curiosity about drinking. I had already seen up close what serious drinking could do to a person, and was not at all interested in alcohol. I never had more than a sip to taste until … Continue reading

Blogging Your Health: Pros and Cons

The other day, I was thinking long and hard about blogging your health: what to say, how much detail to give, who gets to read your posts. It’s a tricky issue, to say the least. Let’s look at some positives and negatives. The advantages of blogging your health can include: Ease. Make one post/update to your social networking site of choice and all your friends get the news at the same time. It’s quick and easy — and that’s good at a time when you may not have a lot of time and energy to devote to keeping everybody updated. … Continue reading

Sarah Palin: Supermom or In Way Over Her Head?

Republican presidential campaign, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin shocked some supporters yesterday by announcing that her 17-year-old daughter Bristol is five months pregnant. According to insiders, Palin, the 44-year-old Alaskan governor and mom of five children released her statement to the media yesterday to combat an Internet rumor that Bristol may have mothered Palin’s youngest son, Trig, who was born 4 months ago with Down Syndrome. Apparently, this particular rumor has been circulating for a while, though ever since John McCain selected Palin to be his vice president late last week, the buzz on Bristol has reached epic proportions. Personally, … Continue reading

Look Who’s Performing at Tomorrow’s Super Bowl

It’s the NFL’s biggest game and some media experts say it could attract one of the largest TV audiences in history. I’m talking about the major match up between the undefeated New England Patriots and the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. If you plan to tune into the big game tomorrow (some only watch to see the commercials) you’ll hopefully witness a worthwhile battle on the field, but if nothing else you’ll be treated to some great entertainment. Less than 3 months after releasing her debut album, the youngest “American Idol” winner ever, Jordin Sparks, will be performing … Continue reading

The Baby Blog in Review: September 16 to September 29

It’s that time of the week again when I review what’s happening in the baby blog. If you have reading to catch up on, go grab a cup of coffee and have a seat! Sept 16 Why Use a Baby Hammock? A baby hammock is a great way to help ease your little one back to sleep because instead of producing a motorized motion, a hammock sways and bounces with the babies own movements. Therefore, when the baby stirs, the hammock responds and gently lulls baby back to sleep. Sept 17 How to Dress Your Baby for Cold Weather Stop … Continue reading

Super Crazy Super Bowl Bet

What is it about professional football that makes some people commit such outrageous acts (and I’m not talking about the players)? Surely, you’ve seen those half-naked die-hard NFL fans that paint various body parts in their favorite team’s colors in an effort to illustrate their loyalty. This level of “loyalty” is elevated to the umpteenth degree when a fan’s team makes it to the Super Bowl. In come the wild bear carcasses and horseshoe hats and out goes all sense of practicality. That’s what the love for the game does to a person, I guess. Listen, I’m no party pooper … Continue reading
