Getting Distractions Out of Your Shots

Don’t you hate it when you think you’ve taken the best shot ever only to find that there’s a random person in the background or that there’s a plant growing out of someone’s head? It happens, but there are some simple things you can do to get the “stuff” out of your photos. The first is to be aware of the background while taking the photo. Can you wait a couple of seconds for the tourist in the background to move? Sometimes this is easier said than done, granted, but often a little patience goes a long way. Other times, … Continue reading

The Best Kind of Distraction

My son is adorable. He’s just recently joined the “4 months old” club and I couldn’t be prouder of him. He sits up better every day. He’ll look into your eyes and smile. He’ll laugh. He’ll play with toys you put in front of him. He’s gaining talents in every area. It is amazing to me that he’s cuter each and every day. He shares that trait with my wife. So allow me to paint a picture for you. This is a cautionary tale to all parents of newborns and I share it to caution you of the dangers that … Continue reading

Should You Have More Than One Home Based Business?

One of the questions that may be on your mind as you set out to begin your home – based business is whether you will begin just one business or whether you will have multiple home-based businesses. There are advantages to each type of arrangement, and your final decision will have to be based upon your needs and the needs of your family. Some home-based businesses lend themselves better to being run alongside of each other than others do, so this is certainly one thing to think about before making a decision to have more than one business operating at … Continue reading

The Factor Tree

Kids love to do work on the computer. Somehow even the hardest subject digests easier if a keyboard and a mouse are involved. Parents also seem to love the convenience of having their student work online. No paper work, progress reports are automatic and normally there are no tears involved. One such online program is The Factor Tree. The Factor Tree is an online math supplemental program for children in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade. This online program is not intended to replace a math curriculum but enhance your current curriculum. Let’s be honest, if we need to supplement the … Continue reading

Walking As Therapy

While walking can be a fun, enjoyable activity it can also be therapeutic. There are times when I walk that I really want company, whether it to be my husband or my children. Other times I just want to listen to my iPod. But then there are times where I need it for therapy. I think the best time to walk is after you have experienced a bad day. This is a great way to “walk things off” in a healthy manner. Instead of turning to that bag of salty chips or chocolaty ice cream, use that time of walking … Continue reading

Things You Learn When Electricity It Out

You never realize how often you go to turn on a light inside the walk in closet or any room even when you know the electricity is out. It’s force of habit almost to reach for the switch. It makes us realize how dependant we are on it these days. Here is a list of the things you can’t do and those things you should do when the power is out. You can’t listen to radio and get updates about what is happening or turn on the computer unless it runs by battery. It makes you realize that a backup … Continue reading

Irresponsible Pet Owners

In my last article I mentioned that I can’t watch several shows on Animal Planet because they upset me. Next to Animal Cops, the other shows that I find disturbing are those where dog trainers go to people’s homes to help with their dogs’ behavioral problems. For my second “Be Kind to Animals Week” article, I want to focus on irresponsible pet owners. Irresponsible pet owners are one of my biggest peeves, and the reason why I don’t like dog training shows. Watching those shows it seems like most of the time, the dogs have problems because their owners don’t … Continue reading

Three More Ps in Marriage

Yep, I’m still in the Ps. Here is one positive P, one neutral depending on how you react, and one you definitely don’t want to have in your marriage. Praise Every single person responds to genuine praise. It not only makes a person feel good, it makes them more inclined to do more things that will earn them further praise. Just as good parents praise their children when they do something right, or pleasing and respond appropriately, so we need to praise our spouse. Praise them as often as you can for the thoughtful things they do, for helping out … Continue reading

Self Reflection as Self Motivation

If I haven’t said so before: I’m a Ph.D. student. One of the things I study is playwriting (writing for the theatre). My instructor recently gave a wonderful final assignment. Our final paper was a guided self-assessment of our work in the field of playwriting over the past 4 months. While I’ve been accustomed to lengthy well documented and researched papers in graduate school I found this one of the most difficult, enjoyable, and learning filled papers I’ve ever written. Do you ever stop for long enough to actually assess what you’ve accomplished in a given set of time? Many … Continue reading
