The Painting II

Earlier I talked about the amazing painting my wife created for the kids’ room. It was an abstracted guitar in honor of our son’s fascination with that instrument in particular. The next time she painted our son was by her side painting with her, the two of them side by side. After that painting lesson with his mother our son got recognizably “better” at drawing. He intended to making certain marks on the page, in certain colors, in certain places. That whole situation taught me how much children learn from their parents. The things that are demonstrated to us as … Continue reading

The Little Painting Boy

Last time I talked about my wife creating a wonderful painting for our son’s room (and it really is wonderful). It was a painting of a guitar and our son really enjoyed it. He’s always been a fan of music. Both Mom and Dad have a love for the arts. We’ve both dabbled in each of them more than a little, and I’ve gone through lots of schooling in the arts (theatre in particular). We play guitar and piano and tin whistle while grandpa plays drums. The one thing our son hadn’t yet gotten into was painting. Mom made sure … Continue reading

If you had an October baby, congratulations! I hope that you will spend some time with us here at Families.com, as we bring you the latest news and tips for you and your family. Here is the Baby Blog month in review for October. October 1st Insect Repellent and Young Children Protecting my children is the number one priority, but one thing that I tend to avoid is insect repellent. Get To Know A Prophet

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all sit down with a prophet or an apostle and get to know them one on one? I would love that opportunity! Although, it would probably be a little scary at first, I can bet that they are all loving, personable men that would instantly make us feel at ease. While we may not all have that chance, I did run across a new portion of the church website that they are in the process of creating where you can read a short bio about each member of the first presidency and apostles. … Continue reading

The Ballerina

Sometimes my wife outdoes herself. When our first child was on his way into the world we were certain we had everything under control. We thought we knew everything. While we ended up basically having things under control, we certainly didn’t know everything. We spent too much money on new clothing and not enough second-hand stuff we were given or could get on the cheap. We had too many ideas about what to do to our baby’s room and not enough money or time to really implement a fraction of it. He had furniture, to be sure, and bedding and … Continue reading

Nursery Ideas

It all began one warm summer day as I was washing sheets from the three beds in our home; our queen, the guest/our son’s full, and the crib. I started thinking about ways to make the kid’s bedroom work for both our son and our unborn daughter. Around the time that my husband and I were planning our wedding, I read an article about using white bed linens and towels not only for ease of washing but also for simplicity and cohesion. Needless to say, I did not purchase white bed linens or towels. With multiple moves and rearrangement of … Continue reading

The Wall

This post isn’t really about “the wall” because it’s about our home. There are lots of walls in our home. And when I saw that there are lots of walls I say it somewhat happily. Divisions bring interest. Walls are the sort of things that keep our son’s toys mostly within the confines of what we call his room. There’s lots of room in his room, incidentally, and having a dedicated play place for the balls and blocks and puzzles and other objects he’s acquired from family members goes a long way towards keeping the rest of our home in … Continue reading

Tween Make-Up Drama

Thank heavens for little girls… who couldn’t give a rip about make-up. That’s my daughter. The kid couldn’t be more uninterested in eye shadow, lip gloss or face shimmer. Thank heavens indeed. Of course, she’s only six years old, but given that many of the girls in her first grade class have hosted princess parties complete with make-up mini bars, I’d say I’ve got a good thing going. I hope it lasts until she’s 25. Okay, maybe 23. Personally, I don’t think first graders, tweens or teens need to be painting their faces to look “pretty.” What’s wrong with what … Continue reading

Don’t Lend Money You Can’t Afford to Give

When I was a little girl there was nothing good to watch on TV during the day. Cartoons and other children’s programming were on in the morning and after school. Soap operas and talk shows ruled the airwaves during the day. I didn’t like either one. Then something marvelous came to daytime programming: The People’s Court. There have been many great courtroom shows and many great judges since Judge Wapner. My favorite, and probably the most successful, is Judge Judy. I appeared before Judge Judy in 1997 and she’s a mean little mama (credit WKRP in Cincinnati). I had sued … Continue reading
