Looking Your Best in Front of the Camera

Some people despise going to the dentist, while others can’t stand the thought of standing in long lines at the DMV. For my mom, nothing ruins her day more than having to pose for a family picture. The woman can’t stand being in front of the camera, and it shows. If a picture speaks a thousand words, then the images my mom reluctantly appears in clearly shout: “I don’t want to be here.” If you are as camera-shy as my mom, you might find the following tips helpful for those times when you are forced to smile on cue: Lips: … Continue reading

Two Top Teeth

I feel like shouting from the rooftops! I feel like taking out a full-page advertisement in a newspaper! I feel like jumping up and down in a public place while screaming: MY SON HAS FOUR TEETH! I’m not entirely sure what this actually means for babies. Does this mean he’ll be eating steaks with Dad in the next couple of weeks? Does this mean that he’ll begin to start eating more adult foods with Mom and Dad? Does this mean that we’ll have be significantly more frightened about the possibility of him “biting off more than he can chew” and … Continue reading

Two Front Teeth

All of the fussing, it turns out, wasn’t for nothing. My son just recently cut two front teeth and his parents are very excited about it. We’re quite thrilled that our little boy could cut through something tough with his nature-given mouth-knives. (As I’m writing this he’s flashing his shiny new teeth at me now and smiling big.) Despite all of the pain, the crying, and the fevers (which, I’m told, teething can actually cause) our son’s teeth have made it out of the gums and into the world. They are now a part of what becomes a daily exercise … Continue reading

The Horror of Dental Insurance & Teeth

So the day is rapidly approaching when I will go to the oral surgeon to have my assessment done, I can only hope that we will be able to get to the procedure quickly and efficiently. I drive nearly 30 minutes to his office and go through all the paper work and the x-rays. Eventually, he comes in to have a sit down with me and we go over everything. He says they can remove the wisdom teeth in two stages or all at once, it really depends on what the insurance says. I am feeling pretty confident because at … Continue reading

A Quick Guide to Your Baby’s Teeth

Maybe it’s just me but I knew all sorts of things about my baby’s development. I knew when it was normal to hit all sorts of milestones from the first smile to jumping up and down! But I didn’t really know a lot about dental development in infants. It seems to be somewhat of a forgotten subject. I knew to brush the gums once a day. I knew to brush teeth after meals but when it came to knowing things about the normal eruption of teeth or how many teeth a toddler should have–I drew a blank. So in case … Continue reading

What is Your 11 Month Old Up To?

I am going to savor every moment of this last month. The last month before my baby officially turns into a one year old. I can’t take it. The time has gone by way too quickly. It always does. Today is his 11 month birthday and the best gift he could give me? He finally said Mama. Intentionally. You see, he has been saying “Dada” intentionally for a few months now. I have to admit that I’ve been more than a little jealous. My husband is fabulous and wonderful, and deserves the love too, but a Mom is always eager … Continue reading

Better Late Than Never

(Scooting came easily, bike riding not so much.) My daughter was born nearly three weeks before her due date. We were all shocked and a bit ill-prepared. A few pieces of furniture hadn’t been built yet and I didn’t have a hospital bag picked out, let alone packed. Still, there’s no stopping a baby from coming out when she is ready… and it’s hard to shove her back in when you’re not. My daughter arrived kicking and screaming and we welcomed her with open arms. Interestingly, though, despite her early arrival, she hasn’t hit some critical milestones before her peers. … Continue reading

Prepping For the Back-to-School Blitz

Still haven’t found a Scooby-Doo backpack… C’mon people; help me out here. Time is not on my side. Where did the summer go? Year-round students in the Chicago Public School system return to class tomorrow. Meanwhile, kids in Hawaii, Seattle, Atlanta and parts of North Carolina already started the new school year. Thankfully, my daughter has two more weeks of summer vacation before reality crashes in on our blissful routine-less mornings. Oh, how I dread school day mornings. Getting back into the groove of laying out uniforms, packing lunches, filling backpacks, making breakfast (then forcing half-asleep kids to eat the … Continue reading

Can Bullying Be Stopped Before It Starts?

Growing up, everyone experiences the wrath of a bully on at least one occasion. For a child with a disability, it can be a daily battle. As adults, most of us know that bullying is wrong and mean, and we try to teach our children to be nice to everyone. But for kids, this can be difficult when they are faced with the peer pressure to fit in. There is always advice being offered on how to deal with a bully at school, but is it possible to keep the bullying from ever starting in the first place? Maybe. When … Continue reading

Organizing a Baby Book

Most first time scrappers start out making a baby book and move on from there. A baby scrapbook is a great way to get your feet wet scrapping. After all, baby scrapbooks don’t have to be finished in a day, week or even a month. Most baby scrapbooks are pieced together bit by bit. When I started my daughter’s first scrapbook she was about two months old. Since I was a new mom I didn’t have the time or energy to create unique layouts on a daily basis. However, I stayed organized by taking photos on a regular basis and … Continue reading
